Millions of young Americans suffer with acne. Acne is a common, chronic skin condition caused by inflammation of oil-producing sebaceous glands. Acne breakouts are most common on the face, but they can also occur on the back, shoulders, neck, chest, scalp, upper arms and legs. Acne develops when skin cells don’t shed properly – they stick together and plug up the pores. This blockage encourages an oil called sebum and a bacteria called Propionibacterium (P. acnes) to build up in the skin pores, leading to inflammation. The oil is produced by the sebaceous glands.
At Radiance of Westchester we use Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) to treat acne. PDT is the most recent advance in treating moderate to severe acne. Now patients can avoid the mood depression, birth defects, dryness and other harsh side effects that can result from taking systemic oral drugs such as Accutane. The process begins with a topical sensitizing agent, called Levulan. Levulan is applied to the skin and then activated with our Palomar Medical IPL Laser. This therapy not only helps unclog the pores but also kills acne causing bacteria by shrinking over active sebaceous glands.
Radiance of Westchester also provides those who suffer from acne with:
Acne Scar Treatment: Radiance of Westchester also has Palomar Medical’s Fractional Skin Resurfacing Laser to help reduce Acne Scarring.
Cleansing Facials: A steam driven treatment that draws out impurities and cleanses the pores, often called the “Teen Facial.”
Therapeutic Peels: Helps dry up oil producing sebaceous glands and acne bacteria.
Obagi Acne Products: Obagi is the world’s leading medical skin care line. Their Clenziderm Acne System is an excellent home use regimen to help control acne after treatments.
