Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) FAQs

What is Levulan?

Levulan or Aminolevulinic acid, is a naturally occurring photosensitizing substance that is found in the human body. Levulan has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of actinic keratosis, or pre-cancerous skin lesions. Levulan is activated by a Photofacial treatment (Intense Pulsed Light) to improve the appearance and reduce active acne, by retarding sebaceous gland oil secretions and acne causing bacteria growth.

Is Levulan safe?

Yes. Levulan has been FDA-approved to treat pre-cancerous skin lesions called actinic keratosis. Levulan has been proven to be an effective treatment for a number of skin conditions including active acne.

How many treatments are needed to see results?

The number of treatments will be determined by the condition and area being treated. Usually a series of three treatments 2 – 4 weeks apart is the most effective. However, many patients see dramatic improvement after just one treatment.

Is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) uncomfortable?

The Levulan application is totally painless and the Photofacial treatment is only mildly uncomfortable.

Will I experience side effects from PDT?

Side effects from Photodynamic Therapy may include mild discomfort, redness and possible skin peeling on the treated area. These side effects tend to go away in a few days.

How quickly can I resume daily activities?

Most people feel comfortable going back to their normal activities immediately following treatment. It is recommended that direct exposure to the sun be avoided for 36 hours following treatment due to increased photosensitivity.

How much time is needed for Photodynamic Therapy?

The amount of time depends on the area and severity of the condition being treated. The Levulan is generally applied from 30 – 60 minutes before the Photofacial and the Photofacial may last 15 – 30 minutes.
