Acne: Pimples and postules produced by the inflammation of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles of the skin. Acne lesions are most common on the face, but can also occur on the neck, chest, back, and shoulders.
Acne Scarring: Permanent indentations and marks on the skin’s surface left after acne lesions have subsided.
Acne Scar Removal: Treatments to remove or diminish acne scars include microdermabrasian and fractional skin resurfacing.
Age Spots (Brown Pigment, Brown Spots, Liver Spots, Sun Spots): Small, flat pigmented spots most often seen on areas of the body that have been exposed to the sun over a period of years.
Age spots usually occur after age 40.
Beauty Spa: A professional salon where aesthetic services for the face and body and relaxation services such as massage are carried out.
Board Certified Surgeon: An M.D. who has completed the required courses in surgery, including an accredited residency. Dr. Neil Goodman is a Board Certified Surgeon, specializing in cosmetic surgery.

Botox: Nonsurgical purified protein treatment that works by relaxing facial muscles to reduce frown lines and smooth away wrinkles. Botox can be used to lift the brow, smooth out forehead and frown wrinkles, crows’ feet, and so forth. Botox lasts up to four months.
Breast Augmentation/Breast Enhancement/Breast Enlargement (Augmentation Mammoplasty): A surgical procedure of inserting an implant behind each breast.
Breast Implant: Typically made of saline or silicone, it expands the breast area to give a fuller breast, better contour, and more cleavage.
Breast Lift (Mastopexy): This procedure raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue.
Breast Reduction Surgery (Reduction Mammoplasty): Removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion to the body.
Broken Capillaries: Sun damage and aging, along with excessive alcohol or caffeine, can cause the facial skin and capillary walls to lose elasticity and the capillaries beneath the skin to become visible, appearing “broken.”
Brown Pigment/Brown Spots: Sometimes called age spots or liver spots, excess brown pigment or brown spots are caused by aging of collagen-producing cells and can be sped up by sun damage.
Cellulite: Subcutaneous fat and fibrous tissue that has a dimpled appearance. Cellulite frequently appears on buttocks and thighs.
Cellulite Reduction: Achieved through skin tightening with Thermage Cellulite Procedure.
Chemical Peel: Facial peels, such as glycolic acid are used on the face (and neck, back, and chest) to reduce wrinkles, especially those associated with sun damage, as well as treat acne and uneven pigmentation.
Collagen: The main connective tissue of the skin, responsible for strengthening. With aging, collagen production slows and elastin, the substance that enables skin to snap back has less spring.
Cosmetic Facial: A term for facial treatments that clean, exfoliate, and nourish the skin. Deep-pore cleansing and extractions are also performed.
Cosmetic Surgery: Surgery that is performed to improve external appearance rather than general health.
Crows Feet: Wrinkles in the skin at the outer corners of the eyes.
Dermabrasion: A cosmetic procedure to remove minor skin surface irregularities and scars, making the surface appear smoother.
Dermal Fillers: A product such as Radiesse or Juvederm used to smooth out wrinkles and plump skin.
Dry Skin/Rough Skin: With age, skin becomes drier, duller, flakier, and rougher due to factors like hormonal changes. Treatments such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and photofacials improve this condition.
Dysport: Nonsurgical treatment that works by relaxing facial muscles to reduce frown lines and smooth away wrinkles. Like Botox, Dysport, can be used to lift the brow, smooth out forehead and frown wrinkles, crows’ feet, and so forth.
Enlarged pores/Large pores: Oily skin, blackheads, and whiteheads—cause pores to be clogged with oil, stretching the skin and enlarging pores. Genetic background and sun damage can also cause enlarged pores.
Electrolysis: Individual hair removal is done by transmitting an electrical current into the hair root, destroying it so it can’t grow back. Laser hair removal is sixty times more effective than electrolysis.
Facial Folds/Marionette Lines: The lines or wrinkles that extend from the outer corners of the mouth down toward the chin.
Facelift/Face Lift: A surgical procedure to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck.
Fat Transfer (Breasts, Buttocks): A procedure that adds volume and shape to desired parts of the body, such as the breasts or buttocks. Fat transfer is often performed in conjunction with laser lipolysis procedures.
Fine Lines: Wrinkles caused by aging that can be corrected with facial skin rejuvenation procedures such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and photofacials as well as dermal fillers and Botox.
Fractional Skin Resurfacing: A laser skin resurfacing technology used to treat acne and surgical scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, stretchmarks, melasma (brown pigment), and improve skin tone and color.
Fraxel: A laser skin resurfacing treatment. At Radiance of Westchester fractional skin resurfacing is performed with the premier Palomar 1540 laser instead, which does not have the downtime or pain associated with Fraxel.
Frown Lines: The furrowed line/wrinkles that develop between the eyebrows.
Hair Removal: Methods for removing unwanted hair, all with varied lasting results, include shaving, waxing, depilatories (creams), bleaching, electrolysis, and laser permanent hair removal.
Hyperpigmentation: An increase in melanin in the skin, the substance in the body that is responsible for color (pigment). Age or brown spots are moderate examples of hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage, hormonal imbalance, or inflammation.
Injectables: Dermal fillers used to add volume and smooth out wrinkles.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): A light energy applied to certain parts of the body, used in permanent hair removal and skin rejuvenation treatments. Radiance offers the Palomar Starlux 500 system—the most powerful light-based aesthetic platform on the market today.
Juvederm: A filler containing hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin, that helps to add volume and hydration. Juvederm is used to smooth away facial wrinkles and folds like smile or parenthesis lines and can last up to 12 months.
Laser: Light amplification stimulated by the emission of radiation.

Liquid Facelift: A nonsurgical procedure utilizing Botox and dermal fillers to create a wrinkle-free face, raised cheekbones, and fuller plump lips.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT): Light-based aesthetic platform which filters light to target blood vessels and pigmented lesions.
Radiesse: A dermal filler comprised of calcium-based microspheres that fills and corrects lines around the nose and mouth, including nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and smile lines. Radiesse lasts up to one year.
Redness: A red/flushed appearance caused by inflammation of the skin, broken capillaries, and/or rosacea.
Restylane: A dermal filler comprised of hyaluronic and used to reduce wrinkles. Results typically last from 4-6 months.
Rosacea: Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that causes redness and produces small red bumps or pustules. Radiance’s photofacial treatment program can help reduce the conditions of rosacea, improve skin tone, and reduce redness.
